A Change of Scene

As a New York based architectural photographer, I am photographing buildings in the concrete canyons of a big city most of the time.  Occasionally I get away from Gotham.  Currently I am in New Hampshire: the White Mountains region.  Where ever I am, I photograph the architecture in its settings.  My photographs in Northern NH are so disparate from those I shoot in New York.  Here, the scenery is dramatically different from that of sprawling and/ or vertical urban environs.  This photograph is an example of a lifestyle that typifies why I return to the area again and again.  Architecture and its setting truly indicates a society and its functionality.  The people of a vicinity create buildings that incorporate natural and man-made embellishments to suit their wants and needs.  In NH nature plays a significant role in architectural conceptualization.  It is always challenging and stimulating to juxtapose "city and country" in my architectural photography.

The Colonial Theatre Opening

Yesterday I had the marvelous opportunity to have a "Meet the Photographer" and to show my artistic perspective through a slide presentation at the iconic Colonial Theatre in Bethlehem, NH.  The event was also sponsored by the Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation which did a fabulous job setting up a delicious and beautiful reception in my honor.  Old friends, family and new friends came.  There were many special moments for me as a photographer and as a person who loves the gorgeous White Mountain Region of NH.  As an artist, I see things that I want to share with others, expressing myself through my photography.  I am fortunate to exhibit and to speak in marvelous places such as the Colonial Theatre and to have its support and that of the BHC and all those who attended yesterday's event: Thanks!

Photographic Point of View

Today I will present my photographic point of view of Bethlehem, NH at the iconic Colonial Theatre on Main Street in Bethlehem.  In coming to this place since 1975, I have developed feelings for it that are imprinted on my artistic perspective.  I hope to share these insights with others who have similar connections to Bethlehem or new-comers who may see a beautiful and historic New England town through my black and white and sepia photography.

Influences: Atget

Eugene Atget (1857-1927) was a French photographer who lived and worked most of his life in Paris.  Atget was a genius at elevating the "ordinary" street scene to pure magic through his photographic eye.  Many of the works are in soft sepia tones which emphasizes their dreamy quality.  Life in Paris always seems marvelous.  Atget made it especially so with his photographs.  He is one of my mentors and influences in my own photography.

Incorporating Nature

All architecture exists in its environment.  Frequently there are natural elements to enhance architecture.  I deeply appreciate the ways in which nature may provide context and detail for architecture.  After all, nature has been practicing architecture for a long time.

A Journey of Contrasts

Traveling from the "burbs (about a half hour from midtown Manhattan)" to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens presents an interesting journey of contrasts.
